Bookgroup of the Month Archive

Every month we feature a different bookgroup. We'd like to hear from other bookgroups. Please email us at info@bookgroup.info and tell us about your group. If we choose it we'll send you a book voucher for 10.

Phantom Book Group, London

Bookgroup of the Month, May 2013

Who are you?

We are a mixed group of people, ranging between 7 and 15 each month. We are a fun, easy going bookgroup who take turns to pick books and chair the meetings. We meet in a pub in Greenwich and also meet at other times for social activities and films!

How did you get started?

Kirstie, the group organiser moved to London and decided to set up a group. A post on a local blog, and a listing on the Bookgroup.info website got the first meeting going in a local coffeeshop. After that, meetings were moved to a local pub and we've been meeting there ever since. We will be having our 4th birthday this August. :) There will be cake!

How long have you been going?

4 years

Where and how often do you meet?

We meet once a month in The Cutty Sark Tavern in Greenwich. A lovely location with excellent views, good food and tasty beer and wine.
We always put our meeting details here: http://bookgroupgreenwich.blogspot.co.uk/

What sort of books do you read?

Mostly fiction books, but it varies as it is totally up to the person who chooses the book. Favourites have ranged from Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides to James Bond by Ian Fleming. We have a list of all the books we've read here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Apdey2MsON3TdDVNeThQa0JlaVJBQW5vQmtYZGpTbnc&usp=sharing&authkey=CLyPrKEI

Which books have provoked the best discussion?

Usually books which split opinions! Books which are universally liked or disliked tend not to create so much discussion. On Her Majesty's Secret Service was well debated, as was A Confederacy of Dunces and number9Dream.

What was your worst read?

That varies depending on who you ask! The Unbearable Lightness of Being was quite bad for some members, but others loved it. The same goes for James Bond.....

Anything else?

We are always looking for new members and also like to invite authors to come and visit us. :)
