Bookgroup of the Month Archive
Every month we feature a different bookgroup. We'd like to hear from other
bookgroups. Please email us at email@example.com and tell us about your
group. If we choose it we'll send you a book voucher for £10.
Latin American & Spanish Book Group, London
Bookgroup of the Month, October 2014
Who are you?
We are a disparate group of people with two Argentinians, two Colombians and one Spaniard amongst the members the others being British including one former UK ambassador. The group is probably unique in the UK.
How did you get started?
The group was formed by the librarian of Canning House which is an organisation devoted to promoting business and cultural ties between the UK and Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries. We are now independent of Canning House.
How long have you been going?
Next month we will celebrate our 11th anniversary with a dinner in a Latin American restaurant.
Where and how often do you meet?
We meet in a quiet cafe in Central London on the second Monday of every month excepting August.
What sort of books do you read?
At the moment we only read the English translation of books by Latin American writers, mostly novels but also short stories and historical memoirs.
Which books have provoked the best discussion?
This is a difficult question to answer looking back over 11 years. What is certain is that regardless of the perceived quality of the book we always have a lively and interesting discussion.
What was your worst read?
'The Alchemist' by Paolo Coelho read in June 2009 immediately springs to mind. It was disparaged by most, possibly all the group.
We can read the chosen book in any language but the discussion is always in English. One problem that we have is finding a Spanish language version of a book at a reasonably cheap price.
