Home to the Bookshop is a seventeenth-century clapboard house across from the church of St Mary the Virgin, a short stroll from Wivenhoe’s picturesque quayside. But we are not all old fashioned charm. Our friendly, knowledgeable booksellers are happy to help and advise you, and if your needs are not met from stock, we can order a book for next day delivery, or source it from an out-of-print supplier.
Our business was established in 1976, when Christina Foyle came to perform the opening ceremony. We believe that a strong, vibrant bookshop can play an essential local role, and we have a wonderfully loyal, supportive and diverse community of readers. Our tremendously successful (and huge!) reading group was National Penguin/Orange Reading Group Prize runner-up in 2006. We meet monthly to wine, dine and discuss the book at a local restaurant.
We are renowned for our eye-catching window displays, often colour-themed, and for our tiny Over-the-Sofa Gallery where new artists exhibit monthly, and we hold an annual retrospective! Events are our forte! We support local authors with signings and launches, hold regular private view evenings for our gallery, and run a variety of fun days for younger readers. We’ve been quite overwhelmed by the demand for our latest event, the Saturday morning Philosophy Breakfast. Our lively website and regular newsletter enjoy a wide readership, and we are very proud to have recently launched our own publishing company, Wivenbooks.
